Would you believe me if I told you that I like to spend my Friday nights putting design boards together? I started working on this last weekend and can definitely tell that I have some pent up creativity pent-up. I’m hoping I can get a few things ordered for our primary bedroom asap. So many items are on backorder and I’m thinking that if I order now, they will arrive just in time for us to move into our new home.
First, let’s address the elephant in the (primary) room. One of the questions that often slides into my DM’s:
What Size Rug do you put under a king size Bed?
Larger is always better! In our past bedrooms, we’ve had an 8’x10′ rug under our king size bed, but only because the room size didn’t allow for a bigger rug. If you can fit a 9’x12′ in your space, opt for the larger size.
Primary Bedroom Layout
Now that we have rug size covered, let’s dive into our future primary bedroom. My goal for this space is a West Coast vibe that is calming, a mix of wood tones and rich, earthy colors. Here’s a peek at our bedroom floor plan. The room size is approx. 15’x12’6″ and features two windows on the back wall.

I put together two different mood boards – a splurge and a save. I’ll probably incorporate a few pieces from each, but wanted to put together a high and low budget bedroom design. Not everyone has a large budget, but if you’re like me, I love saving when I can and splurging on a few key pieces that I know will be timeless and last many years.
I already have one of these pieces, just waiting in an unopened box. Can you guess what it is?

If you guessed the bed, kudos to you! Earlier this year, on Instagram, I talked about how we purchased a new bed frame. I purchased the bed during a big sale, before we event decided that we were moving. Even though it’s sitting unopened in our storage unit, I’m so glad I purchased it at that time. Not only did I get it 25% off, the price has gone up about $500 since this spring. Anyone else notice a price increase in furniture?
Another reason why I wanted to put this board together, is because I’m going to watch for sales around the holidays. Hopefully a few things will go on sale and I will definitely share on my Instagram stories if they do!

DIY’s Planned
The primary bedroom will definitely have a few DIY’s (naturally). We’re planning on making the room ultra cozy by adding an electric fireplace and adding a faux plaster look. We’ll work on the living room fireplace before the bedroom fireplace, so it might be a year down the road before we get to this project. Fingers crossed for sooner!
Another project idea, I want to add a glass modern barn door to our primary closet. It will have a swing door to start, but I’m hoping we can switch this out eventually. We will also have a vaulted ceiling in our bedroom and way down on the list, I’m hoping we can add beams or possible tongue and groove paneling to the ceiling. You know me, I love projects and will share every step of the way.
Below are all the sources for my primary save and splurge bedrooms. Thanks for reading and following along as this room comes to life!
